Sometimes, it feels like music is capable of sympathizing with and understanding you. When the weight of the world seems most overwhelming, some quiet, but heartfelt and melancholic music can provide wonderful consolation and a sense of calm - plus they're very beautiful. Thankfully, there are plenty of pieces to match any mood, so here are some of my favorites if your looking for some mournful melodies.

Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 23, K. 23, Second Movement

This is very beautiful second movement, in an all around excellent piece. It is a combines wistful, solem, and sorrowful tones, to create music that will instnaty put one in a reflective mood. (Listen to this piece while walkikng outside in a fine, silver, misty rain for added effect).

Chopin: Nocturne No. 20 in C Sharp Minor

This is certainly one of the most beautiful pieces by Chopin, and in general. While listening to it, one can sense that so much feeling and emotion went into to writing it.

While originally written for solo piano, I think this version with piano and violin is also very pretty.

Mozart: Violin Sonata in E Minor, K 304, Second Movement

While lesser known, this is certainly not an inferior piece. Both movements do an excellent job of capturing different minor mode feels. The second movement in particular has a rather sad, reflective sound.

Shostakovich: Waltz No 2

The sad sounds in the piece possibly had real reason for existing, adding a deeper layer penetration. Shostakovich lived in communist Russia under Stalin, and often faced censorship. This piece often sounds to me like a subtle lament, reflecting perstistance through suffering, and a rememberencr of freer times.

Schubert: Coronach

This is a somewhat obscure piece, but a very pretty one all the same. It is very solemn, mournful, and funerally sounding, and will add a sense gravity to any situation, if you want your situations to feel grave for whatever reason.
